The Artist

Charcoal.
Born from fire.

Dirk Van Spitaels (DIRX) transforms the most elemental drawing medium into hyperrealistic images that dissolve the boundary between what is seen and what is felt. Working exclusively in charcoal on paper, each piece is an act of patience and precision.

Based in Belgium, DIRX explores the tension between presence and disappearance — rendering fragments of the natural world in such detail that they begin to lose their fixed identity, inviting the viewer to look closer.

Fire takes everything. Charcoal gives it back.

Each work begins with careful observation, studying surfaces, textures, and structures found in the world. Through enlargement and isolation, these observations are transformed into images that hover between recognition and abstraction.
